The Book Basket

The one best and sufficient reason for a man to buy a book is because he thinks he will be happier with it than without it.

CREDIT AND TRADE POLICY

Selling Books for Credit

We are happy to look at any books you bring in. What we accept is based on what sells, what we already have in stock, and the condition of your books. We normally give in-store credit rather than cash, and for common books we usually give you half the amount we sell them for. We sell most paperbacks for ½ the cover price, so we would give you ¼ of the cover price in credit. For example, if you brought us a $12 paperback, we would sell it for $6 and you would receive $3 in-store credit. Hard cover prices depend on genre, publication date, and other factors. For hard cover books we suspect are especially valuable, we consult on-line resources and make you an offer based on our research results. We will take back any book you bought from us (except those stamped with a red star), provided it is in good condition. We try to price your books and give you credit when you bring them in; if we are too busy, you can leave them and we will notify you. For large collections, we make house calls.

Selling books for Cash

We offer cash for books under certain circumstances. We may pay cash for books with strong topical or regional interest, such as Wyoming and regional history, guns and hunting, art and and craft books, and some children's books. We will also pay cash if you are leaving town or selling a large collection. If so, we would offer you half the amount of the credit we would normally give.

Condition of Your Books

We accept only clean books in readable condition. We do not accept books with animal hair or scent, mold or mildew, food or beverage stains, insects or spiders (dead or alive), or books that smell excessively of smoke. We sometimes make exceptions for books by local authors or regional/local history.

Books We Accept

Most everything. We give 25¢ credit for Reader's Digest condensed books if they have clean and intact covers (dust jacket not necessary). Depending on our stock, we may give 50¢ credit for National Geographic magazines in good clean condition with the original maps/inserts. We accept National Geographic maps without the magazine, but not the magazine without the maps.

Books We Don't Accept

For a more thorough list of books we do not accept click here.

  • Hard cover or oversize paperback romance (except from Christian publishers).
  • Most hard cover best sellers, including Danielle Steele, John Grisham, Belva Plain, and Maeve Binchy.
  • Babysitter's Club and Babysitter's Little Sister.
  • Sweet Valley series.
  • Harlequin and Silhouette EXCEPT those by Nora Roberts, Debbie Macomber and Betty Neels.
  • Worldwide mysteries.
  • Books stamped with a red star -- usually located near the price -- which are books we have removed from inventory.

Buying Books with Credit

You can use your in-store credit to buy most of our books. However, we charge a 50¢ cash fee for each book purchased, payable with cash or check. For example, if you buy a book priced at $12.00, you can use your in-store credit for $11.50 of the price and pay 50¢ in cash (plus tax). If you buy three books totalling $22.00, you can use your credit for $20.50 and pay $1.50 (50¢ per book) in cash (plus tax). There are a few exceptions:

  • A few books are marked "½ and ½"or "½ cash." This means half the price of the book must be paid in cash.
  • A few books, marked "No Trade," are not eligible for in-store credit.
  • International maps and Banangrams are not eligible for in-store credit.

Keeping Track of Your Credit

When we set up your in-store credit account we ask for contact information -- your name, address, phone number, and email address. As you buy and sell books we keep track of your credit. Please note that in-store credit unused for TWO YEARS exprires. We make every effort to contact customers whose credit is about to expire.
